After weeks of speculation and corporate cover-ups, a handful of the infamous LeBron-gets-posterized videos have finally made their way to ye olde Internet. In the one above, we watch as Xavier standout Jordan Crawford drives into the lane and takes to the air with both arms outstretched; triumph is clearly an inevitability. He pays no heed to the icon over whom he is dunking. Rather, Crawford’s body language conveys a sense of youthful invulnerability. He moves through life as effortlessly as he glides down the lane and over a king. His is an existence unfettered by idle concerns.

Then we have LeBron; the fool. Post-dunk, his eyes grow hauntingly vacant, as though forces deep within his soul are compelling him to peer inwardly and reflect on his own mortality. The wobbly gait he displays as he makes his way down the court belies the flimsy mask of courage he has donned. Amid the crowd’s echoing catcalls we can hear a monologue looping in James’ mind; one reminding him that there is no greater truth than the ephemerality of greatness. As a single, near-imperceptible tear runs down his cheek, it suddenly becomes clear why everyone remotely involved in the coverage of sports has spent the past month dissecting this watershed event.
